Take Our Kid to Work Day

TOKTWD

Please find the permission form below.

The National Take Our Kids To Work Day for Gr. 9 students will take place on Wednesday, November 4 this year!

Students are expected to participate in this career exploration opportunity or attend school.

This annual activity is connected to Healthy Living 9 Outcomes so there is an assessment that will be provided - for those going to a work placement it will be an interview assignment and for those staying at school, there is a virtual Career exploration day planned with a research assignment.

Students and their families will be responsible for finding a placement.

Counsellors have presented to Grade 9s this week and discussed ways to try to find a placement if a student cannot go with a parent/guardian ie. family friends, neighbors, coaches, friends’ parent, and they are also encouraged to reach out to various businesses within their community. Spending a day with the manager of a local business could potentially lead to a part time job in the future! You never know what can come of this work placement opportunity. Community outreach also helps students develop skills necessary for the workplace like talking with people they don’t know, communicating via email or a phone call, being friendly, assertive, organized and punctual. If students are considering approaching a business to set up a job shadow, they will need to begin this process as soon as possible!

Students have been informed to complete the Consent form (with your signature) and submit it to their ELA or FLA teacher by October 22. Please DO NOT return the form by email as it complicates tracking. Incomplete forms will not be accepted.

If a student does not return a school activity consent form, they will be expected at school for Take Our Kids to Work Day/Career exploration activities on November 4. Please note there is also section on the consent form for parents/guardians to check off that their teen will be going to school, not participating in an off-site work placement.

Regardless of whether a student is going to a work site on November 4 or coming to school, the school activity consent form MUST BE SUBMITTED with a signature.

Students going with someone other than a family member or authorized HRCE personnel are required to fill out the School Activity Consent Form AND have the job shadow employee/mentor complete the Community Based Risk Assessment Form. Students can get a Risk Assessment form from their ELA or FLA teacher once they know where they are going to job shadow, and if the placement is not with a family member or HRCE employee. The risk assessment form is also due back on October 22.

If parents have questions or concerns about TOKTW day, please contact school counsellors D. O’Leary or S. Aikenhead-Bain or K. Hooke. We hope all of our Grade 9s have a great experience at the workplace on November 4th!
